Edge School (2) vs Calgary International Hockey Academy (4) U15
The Calgary International Hockey Academy opened their U15 season with a win over NAX last weekend, a good start to the year as they prepared to face another strong adversary in Edge School. Powerplay chances galore led to a first period was all Edge School, but at each turn, CIHA found a response. The Mountaineers had ten chances on the man advantage in the game, with Beckhem Falloon’s first-period powerplay goal giving Edge a 2-1 lead. That, though, was on the heels of the moment that spun the game on its head. After Falloon had given Edge the lead, Edge School would end up on a five-on-three powerplay chance late in the first period with a chance to extend the lead further. Rather than providing Edge School a cushion to their lead, CIHA found the equalizer thanks to one of the three penalty killers on the ice, Brixtin Cenaiko (2G, 1A), who blocked a point shot and scored on the ensuing breakaway. CIHA’s PK kept up the good work, killing three in a second period that saw Landon Dalziel score the only goal for CIHA. Cenaiko scored again in the third, with CIHA’s penalty kill finishing the game successful on nine of ten Edge School power plays, and goaltender Oliver Tisnic (31/33) picking up the win.
Rothesay Netherwood School (4/SO) vs Bishop’s College School (3) East CCM
Bishop’s College School opened their season on Wednesday in as dramatic a fashion as they could with a 7-6 win over a Stanstead College team who had won their opener 11-0. They’d follow it up Friday with Rothesay Netherwood School, who were just getting their season underway. Despite not yet getting their season underway, Rothesay started the first period in midseason form, scoring two early and giving RNS an early 2-0 lead. Bishop’s managed to get things back on track after that, especially in a second period that saw them outshoot RNS 14-4. Dominic Schnarr (1G, 1A) scored shorthanded to tie the game at two for Bishop’s who would take the lead momentarily following that, with Cole Toms’ go-ahead goal unfortunately quickly nullified by Dixon Beatty (1G, 1A) for Rothesay, The third and overtime were significantly more evenly-matched than the second, with neither team able to find the breakthrough. The two teams traded goals early in the shootout but weren’t separated from there until the extra shooters hit the ice. Cole Toms was denied by Rothesay’s Dace Gruchy (33/36) on Bishop’s fourth shot, with Drew Moores scoring the game-winner in response to give Rothesay a win in their season opener.
Delta Hockey Academy Black (6) vs North Shore Warriors (0) U15
It took Delta Hockey Academy Black a dramatic shootout to win their season opener over PCHA last weekend, a precursor to the 10-1 thumping they delivered RINK Kelowna the day after. This weekend brings three away games in three days for Delta Black, one that they started slowly, hanging on in a first period on Friday that saw the North Shore Warriors put them under siege, especially during a five-on-three powerplay that Delta Black fended off. Delta started the domination in the second, outshooting North Shore 17-1 in the second and 31-3 in the third, with goal scoring following their dominant offensive performance. After a scoreless first period, Delta scored three in the second and three in the third, led by two goals from Cruz Natt and multi-point efforts from Weston Patrick (1G, 2A), Rhett Lowndes (1G, 2A), and William Anderson (1G, 3A) in the 6-0 win.
Calgary International Hockey Academy (3/SO) vs OHA Edmonton (2) U15 Prep
Calgary International Hockey Academy’s U15 Prep squad had hit the ice twice before Friday, winning both of their previous contests, heading into their clash with an OHA Edmonton team that hadn’t seen game action before they hosted CIHA. Both teams traded chances, with OHA Edmonton the more dominant side for the bulk of the game, but nobody could find a breakthrough until the third period. A wonderful Drennan Blair set-up gave Brody Schwartz the chance to bury his first CSSHL goal, with Reid Hartmann’s goal minutes later giving OHA Edmonton a 2-0 lead. With under five minutes left, a powerplay goal from Miles Coy (1G, 1A) brought CIHA back into the game. CIHA kept pushing, and 2:13 later, found the equalizer, with Parker Lascelle’s first of the season sending the game into overtime. CIHA goaltender Mason Filipchuk (38/40) kept his team in the game throughout, and after a couple big saves in overtime, did so in the shootout as well. Filipchuk stopped all three OHAE attempts with Cohen St. Louis scoring the only goal of the shootout to win it for CIHA.
BWC Academy (9) vs North Shore Warriors (0) U17
A 5-2 win last Friday of BWC over Delta Hockey Academy started their U17 schedule on a high note, a win that stood as their only game of the season until this Friday’s clash with the North Shore Warriors. Those same Warriors hadn’t started their season the way they’d have preferred, being bested by PCHA and Delta to open up their season last weekend. Unfortunately for North Shore, BWC looked as if they were bringing every ounce of momentum from their season-opening victory into Friday’s game. BWC started strong, with Max Goodman (2G, 1A) and Theo Falk’s goals early sending the Lions on their way. To rub salt in the wound, former North Shore Warriors and twin brothers Talen (2A) and Abel Lindsay (1G, 2A) chipped in against their old team minutes later. Both brothers to assisted on Goodman’s second goal to make it three before Talen helped set up Abel for a goal to make it 4-0 before the end of the first period. Matthew Sutherland made it 5-0 in the second, which is where the game stood until the back half of the third, before BWC’s offence would start clicking again, going on a run of four straight goals. Adriano Ciccone (2G, 1A) scored twice in the third and Beckett Sippel (9/9) was credited with a shutout in the 9-0 win.
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (10) vs STAR Hockey Academy (6) U17 Prep
STAR Hockey Academy’s U17 Prep side had as perfect an opening weekend as they could have hoped for, besting the Wenatchee Wild three straight times. This weekend brings the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy to STAR three times, starting Friday afternoon, with the Sea Devils opening their schedule with a 4-3 loss to Shawnigan Lake on Tuesday. An excellent start for PCHA saw them race to a 2-0 lead, but with less than five minutes left in the first, STAR’s turnaround came on hard and fast. After Riley O’Brien scored the first, Benton Fuller and Adam Gilani struck just 37 seconds apart to give STAR a 3-2 lead before the first period had even ceased. The second period brought an incredible PCHA comeback, with four goals in 4:12 from the Sea Devils turning STAR’s lead around thanks to goals from Jackson Squire (2G), Trent Porter (4G, 1A), and Cole Gann (2G) amongst those who helped push PCHA into their big second period lead. Porter scored again to cap off his hat-trick in the third, with the Sea Devils ultimately holding off STAR’s late game pushback to win 10-6.
Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (1) vs Notre Dame Hounds (4) U17 Prep
Notre Dame Hounds opened their season with a 4-1 win at home over Pilot Mound Hockey Academy, getting the scoring started early and closing it out late with an empty-netter. Eli Swift (1G) struck on the power play just past the four-minute mark, and Neylan Martin (1G, 1A) doubled the lead before the first intermission. Marcus Holm (1G) got Pilot Mound on the board on the power play early in the second, but it was as close as the visitors would get, with Keironn Diakite (1G) restoring the three-goal cushion in the third off a feed from Martin. Dominik Chartrand (1G, 1A) capped the scoring into the empty net in the final minute. Reg Huebner (2A) set up two of Notre Dame’s four goals without finding the back of the net himself. Linden Spasoff was nearly perfect between the pipes, stopping 35 of 36 for the win, while Avery Cantleberry made 27 saves in the loss.
Okanagan Hockey Academy (2) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (3/SO) U17
It took a full 65 minutes and eight rounds of a shootout, but Pacific Coast Hockey Academy finally slipped one past Okanagan on home ice for a 3-2 marathon win. Max Chen (1G) struck first for Okanagan, snapping one home less than three minutes into the opening frame. PCHA answered with a quick one-two in the second, Blake Bidney (1G) put one home before Mason Sokolosky (1G) doubled the cushion just over four minutes later. Okanagan Hockey Academy wouldn’t go quietly, though, Riley Hansen (1G) buried the equalizer with under six minutes left in regulation to force extra time. Neither side could find the winner in overtime, even with Owen Magness ringing up a penalty shot that James McRae turned aside. The shootout stretched on and on, with shooter after shooter being denied, until Jace Allin finally beat Nash Atkinson to settle it. McRae was terrific in the crease, stopping 30 of 32 through the extra frames before slamming the door in the skills competition, while Nathen Bazley matched him save for save with 34 stops of his own in the losing effort.
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (5) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (7) U17 Prep
Okanagan Hockey Academy erased two separate deficits and rode a wild third-period sequence to a 7-5 win over RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna at home Friday. RHAK jumped out early through Cole Dobson (1G, 1A), but Cooper Giarraputo (1G, 2A) and Landon Ruck (2G) answered in quick succession to flip the lead before Jordan Anastasiadis (1G, 1A) restored it for the visitors before the first horn. The second period turned into a track meet: Aksel Smith (1G) put RHAK back in front, only for OHA to reel off three unanswered, Seve Paladino (2G, 2A) and Shea Mooney (1G, 1A) cashing in on the power play 13 seconds apart, then Hunter Ryan (1G) making it four straight with the man advantage. Jaxon Lodge (1G) and Alex Ruiz (1G) clawed RHAK back within one late in the frame, setting up a tense third. Ruck’s second of the night, scored on the power play, gave OHA the cushion they needed, and Paladino sealed it with a shorthanded empty-netter in the final minute. Holden Tamm made 30 saves for the win, while Satori Tam stopped 23 of 29 in a hard-fought losing effort.
Delta Hockey Academy Black (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna Red (4) Women’s U18 Prep
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna Red held on for a 4-3 win over Delta Hockey Academy Black in the season opener for both programs, jumping out early and weathering a late push. Charlie Knight (1G) opened the scoring on the power play just past the ten-minute mark, and Iya Morris (1G, 1A) doubled the lead less than a minute later, also with the man advantage, to send RHAKR into the first intermission up two. Jordyn Dumont (1G) extended the cushion early in the second, but Delta answered right back, with Emily Gerdel (1G, 1A) and Abbie Summers (1G) scoring within five minutes of each other to cut the deficit to one. Lea Wallgren (1G, 1A) restored the two-goal lead for RHAKR, but Clara Zhong (1G, 1A) had the last word of the period, converting on the power play to make it a one-goal game heading to the third. Neither side found the net in a tense final frame, with RHAKR holding on behind Addison Guertin, who stopped 34 of 37 for the win.
Northern Alberta Xtreme (7) vs Notre Dame Hounds (3) U15
Corbin Blatz (3G, 1A) put on a show Friday, extending his torrid start to the season and leading Northern Alberta Xtreme to a 7-3 win on the road over Notre Dame. Blatz opened the scoring just two minutes in and struck again shorthanded before the first intermission to give NAX a two-goal cushion. Jamal Caseley (1G) and a shorthanded marker from Augustine Paziuk (1G, 2A) extended the lead in the second, and Daniel Yun (3G) got the home side on the board before Blatz completed his hat-trick and Nash Whalen (1G) piled on to make it 6-1 through 40 minutes. Yun refused to fade quietly, scoring twice more in the third to finish with a hat-trick of his own, but it was well outmatched by NAX’s offensive outburst, capped by an Everett Whelen (1G, 1A) tally off a feed from Blatz.
Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (1) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (4) U15 Prep
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna made light work of a penalty-plagued affair Friday, opening the season with a 4-1 win over Pacific Coast Hockey Academy despite spending nearly the whole night shorthanded. Rowan McGrath (1G) got things going just 51 seconds in, and Tyler Westman (1G) doubled the lead midway through the second to send RHAK into the third up two. PCHA finally cracked the scoreboard early in the third on the power play through Luke Bowes (1G), but Will Jones (1G) answered right back to restore the two-goal cushion, and Colby Boltz (1G, 1A) capped the scoring. Lucas Gosselin was outstanding in net, stopping 35 of 36 despite facing a barrage of Pacific Coast Hockey Academy pressure and eight power-play opportunities against, while Sawyer Elke made 38 saves in a tough-luck loss.
STAR Hockey Academy (2) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (6) U15
Jacoby Charette (3G, 1A) was the story of the night, powering Okanagan Hockey Academy to a 6-2 win at home over STAR Hockey Academy. Teppei Noguchi (1G, 4A) opened the scoring late in the first, and Charette struck moments later to make it 2-0 heading to the second. Neither team found the back of the net in the middle frame, but Okanagan blew the game open in the third, with Ryo Riva (1G) converting on the power play just 38 seconds in and Charette adding his second of the night shortly after. STAR briefly threatened a comeback through Kaiden Thiessen (1G, 1A) and a power-play goal from Owen Miller (1G), but Kohen Louie (1G, 2A) and Charette’s third goal of the game slammed the door for good.
Okanagan Hockey Academy (10) vs Shawnigan Lake School (0) U15 Prep
Okanagan Hockey Academy takes down Shawnigan Lake School in a lopsided 10-0 shutout Friday. Mason Liebel (1G, 1A) got things started just past the seven-minute mark, and Logan Kautz (2G) added the first of his two before the opening intermission to make it 2-0. Okanagan kept building in the second, with Lance Bryant (1G, 2A), Kingston Prenioslo (1G, 1A), and Tyson Tietz (1G) each finding twine to push the lead to five through 40 minutes. The floodgates opened wide in the third, as Kautz, Alex Helgesen (1G, 1A), Oliver Sochting (1G) on the power play, Creedence Gabriel (1G, 1A), and Kristian Bowen (1G, 1A) combined for five more to round out the rout. Isaac Zeeman (3A) was the busiest playmaker on the night, setting up three different goals without cashing in himself.
Delta Hockey Academy Green (5) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (3) Women’s U18 Prep
Delta Green sought to avenge Delta Black’s loss to RHA Kelowna Red earlier in the evening as they faced off against the defending champions. RHA Kelowna would get the early step on Delta Green as Sophia Abougoush’s shot trickled through Mya Young (20/23). RINK would take the 1-0 lead into the intermission, however, could not hold on to it in the middle frame as Halle White (1G, 1A) and Addi McFegan (1G, 1A) netted back-to-back tallies for Delta Green. Sadie Green would get one back for RINK off a sweet play from Kinley Sisson, However, Delta Green would storm back with another two unanswered by Samera Gabriel and Sara Hettle (1G, 1A). Sierra Hickling would get one back for RINK but Adie Schneider (1G, 2A) would put a bow on this one, polishing off a neat breakaway goal to ensure the victory for Delta Green.
Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy (0) vs BWC Academy (7) U17 Prep
Only two BWC Academy skaters left the ice without a point in their second win of the season. Joel Pini (2G) led the goals category with a pair while five other skaters mustered 2 point outings. Ryker Carson would also collect a shorthanded tally late in the second. Jordan Bigelow (24/24) was in net for BWC Academy, registering 24 saves for his second career CSSHL shutout.
